Introduction:

As a first-time traveler to Russia, I was excited to try the country’s traditional cuisine. Being unfamiliar with the cuisine, I was curious to explore the unique flavors and dishes that Russian cuisine has to offer. In this article, I will share my experience and impressions of some of the most popular traditional Russian dishes, as well as some lesser-known regional specialties.

Borscht – A Delicious Beetroot Soup:

Borscht is a famous Russian soup that is made with beets, cabbage, potatoes, and meat, and is served hot or cold. The soup has a deep red color and a unique flavor that is both sweet and sour. The soup is often served with sour cream and a slice of dark rye bread. The beetroot in borscht gives it a distinctive earthy taste, which I found to be surprisingly delicious.

Blini – A Savory and Sweet Russian Pancake:

Blini are thin Russian pancakes that can be served as a savory dish or a sweet dessert. The pancakes are made with buckwheat or wheat flour and can be filled with a variety of fillings, such as caviar, sour cream, or jam. I tried the blini with caviar, and it was a unique and tasty experience.

Pelmeni – Russian Dumplings Filled with Meat or Vegetables:

Pelmeni are traditional Russian dumplings that are similar to Chinese dumplings or Italian tortellini. They are made with a thin dough and filled with meat or vegetables. The dumplings are boiled and served hot, often with a dollop of sour cream. I tried the meat-filled pelmeni, and they were delicious and hearty.

Olivier Salad – A Classic Russian Salad with a Unique Twist:

Olivier salad is a traditional Russian salad made with boiled potatoes, carrots, peas, and pickles, and dressed with mayonnaise. The salad has a unique twist, as it also includes boiled eggs and bologna. Although the combination may seem unusual, the flavors blend perfectly together, creating a tasty and satisfying salad.

Kvass – A Refreshing Fermented Drink:

Kvass is a traditional Russian drink made from fermented rye bread. The drink has a sour, slightly sweet taste and is often served cold in the summer. Kvass is a refreshing and unique alternative to soda or other sugary drinks.

Pirozhki – A Russian Pastry with Various Fillings:

Pirozhki are small, baked pastries that can be filled with meat, vegetables, cheese, or fruit. The pastries are often served as a snack or a quick meal, and they can be found in bakeries and cafes throughout Russia. I tried the pirozhki filled with meat, and they were delicious and filling.
